Shantou is also one of the original SEZ or Special Economic Zones of China, but due to some reasons could not capitalize on this fact like Shenzhen, for example. Nevertheless, the city is beginning to show signs of economic revival with many foreign and local investors showing interest in the SEZ features and benefits that the city has to offer. Besides, the city is also home to one of the best, if not THE BEST, Universities in China – The Shantou University.
This is a historic city, with its roots strongly reminding of the times of the Song and the Yuan dynasties. The Quarter of Shantou was a prominent market in the early 20th century and the architecture here is a mix of traditional Chinese and Western, mostly Victorian, giving it an air of enigma.
